Research scientist at DeepMind and member of the Organising Committee at Indaba
Ulrich is a South African research scientist at DeepMind, who lost his heart somewhere in the bushveld and is always looking for ways to find it. His most recent expedition in this quest is with the Deep Learning Indaba and its community of hard-working, dedicated friends and peers. He holds a PhD in machine learning from the University of Cambridge, lived life on the edge in two high tech startups, managed a team in Apple, and with Noam Koenigstein developed the core of the Microsoft recommender system. He was on the initial Xbox One team, and is still itching to build the next big thing.
Co-Founder and CEO at InstaDeep
Karim helps companies get a grip on the latest AI breakthroughs and deploy them. A graduate of France’s Ecole Polytechnique and former Program Fellow at the Courant Institute in New York, Karim has a passion for teaching and using applied mathematics.
This led him to launch InstaDeep, a fast-growing African AI startup that focuses on decision making for the Enterprise. Nominated at the MWC17 in the Top 20 most intriguing startups by PCMAG, InstaDeep now has offices in Tunis, London, Paris and Nairobi and Lagos.
Karim is also the founder of the TensorFlow Tunis Meetup and a Google Developer Expert in ML. He regularly organises educational events and workshops to share his experience with the community, including mentoring in ML at Google Launchpad Accelerator Africa. Karim is on a mission to democratise AI and make it accessible to a wide audience.
Head of ML at InstaDeep
Marek operates at an intersection of software development and research with a background in physics and computational neuroscience. As Senior Software Engineer, Marek was Tech Lead at DeepMind productionising machine learning models for millions of Google users. Prior, at DeepMind Technologies as Senior Product Engineer, he led the implementation and deployment of a deep learning based computer vision backend for e-commerce. He started his serial startup adventures at Cortexica where as Senior Research Scientist he delivered an innovative on-GPU visual retrieval API to UK and US retail giants. Marek joined InstaDeep to lead automation and scaling of AI-first solutions and accelerate the research pipeline.
AI Engineer at InstaDeep
Tejumade Afonja is an AI Engineer at InstaDeep, a leading company providing AI solutions to the enterprise. As a self-taught programmer, Tejumade has three years’ experience in the field, specialising in Machine Learning and Deep Learning with proficiency in Python and Javascript. At InstaDeep, Tejumade builds and tests Machine Learning models that will be deployed into models creating industry pertinent AI applications. PhD student at KU Leuven (Belgium) and Yonsei University (South Korea)
If studies are a journey through knowledge, Amal’s have been taking her all around the world. After leaving her home country, Tunisia, her first stop was in France for her first years of college. During this first phase, she studied engineering and applied mathematics for 5 years, and had her first contact with the professional world through multiple internships. One of the experiences made her encounter machine learning and decide to specialize in this field. Her PhD research led her to two new countries, South Korea and then Belgium where she has been working for a joint degree between Yonsei University (Korea) and KU Leuven (Belgium). Her research considers different optimization problematics for deep neural networks, such as regularization, specialized loss functions,… She aims to graduate by December 2019, but she chose to go first for research internships. The first took her to San Francisco (United States) where she worked for Oath (former Yahoo research), and the second to London (United Kingdom), where she worked for Google Deepmind.
Research Engineer at instaDeep
Alex is a Research Engineer for InstaDeep. He joined in 2017 after pursuing a Master in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Edinburgh. Before that his research focused on Optimization and Machine Learning. Alex’s role at InstaDeep is leading its main research team on deployment of reinforcement learning methods to real-life applications. Alex also holds a BA in engineering and a MEng in Applied Mathematics from UCL, Belgium.
